Long ago built above the river valley below still lies the ancient Temple of War. Tall stone walls and wide engraved oaken doors bar entrance into the halls, locking away multiple rooms which contain weapons of war as well as magical scrolls of tactical genius used by heroes of the late ages.

The main hall leads you into a large chamber flanked by stone statues and containing multiple pedestals with weapons said to be used by the god of war himself. His blade of vengeance, axe of brutality, skullcrusher and bastion of the brave.

Free TTRPG battlemap of an Infinite Fey Wilds

Deep within the forest the land becomes jagged and broken, ferns cover the ground, gentle drops of water dripping slowly off their verdant leaves from the rains the night before. Crystals protrude from the eroded lands where large roots have grown, or what seams more likely have been magically placed to allow passage, almost like man made bridges.

A giant tree stands before you, a large jagged hole leading deeper into it’s interior. You follow a staircase worn into the wood and are lead into the heart of the tree where a monumental nest made from sticks and stones is surrounded by large crystals.

Free TTRPG battlemap of a Death's Gate

One of your companions has died, but you will not give up on them. You’ve trawled ancient ruins and temples and have found sparse information talking about a place called Death’s Gate. the scriptures note that Death’s Gate is an inter-planer realm where souls go before being sent to the realms of the dead and how one could, theoretically retrieve souls from this location via a key that would open the gate.

And so you travel forth to these realms crossing the ethereal bridge, past the wailing cries of whose souls have already been damned and the ever watchful skeletal statues. When you arrive at Death’s Gate the endless void stands before you, it’s immense nothingness stretching out beyond your sight. You have traveled long to reach this destination, but your will now wavers.

The blade of the arch angel of death lies before you, pulsing dim etheric light. It is the key to open the door to death’s gate and to retrieve the soul of your lost companion. However to touch the key will draw the attention of the grave keepers.

Free TTRPG battlemap of a Floating City of Nexus

The area was trapped, rigged with both magical and mechanical defences. We did this because Yaeverna and I became great. As keepers of the Winged Blade, we were sick of running, sick of living in fear. So we made our home in the sky.

We found the flying citadel wholly by chance. It was difficult to enter, and that was when we realised the abandoned city could be our perfect home.

Life was breathed back into it. We cleaned the tavern, stocked it from trips to the outside world, on our griffons. We cooked in the old kitchen, turned the small library into an office, and stored what magical artefacts we found across different rooms.

There was a larger library, where we prayed to our god, and hoarded the many other volumes we discovered throughout the world.

It was our home for nigh 20 years. You were born there, some time after grandfather died, peacefully. He would have loved to meet you.

Why did we leave? Well, we fled. You see, daughter—THEY found us. Asmodeus’s followers. We destroyed what we could, but were lucky to escape with our lives. They came, with their hellhounds, and abominations, and ransacked the place.

Rumour has it they’re still there today. We were fools to leave such artefacts lying about, believing they would be secure. We may have to destroy the Winged Blade. We can’t run forever. I see now the world isn’t safe so long as it exists. And neither are you.

Has the time come to disguise our past, and start again?
