The scent of the sea is sharp in your nostrils as you approach the docks of a large seaport. But, speaking to the harbormaster to book passage, you learn that all the vessels are landbound. She informs you that monstrously large sharks have been biting holes in their ships, and while there have been many expeditions to kill them, more keep turning up.

Needing passage and unsure what to do, you head to an inn for food and sleep. Inside, you are accosted by a short, balding man with a long, gray beard and a robe he often stumbles over. He explains, in a rather roundabout way, that he’s trying to pay adventurers to seal the cavern network the large sharks come from—but everyone’s been refusing!

You see, he’s a wizard who had a hypothesis that an ancient species of shark (believed to be extinct for millennia) had adapted to survive in warm, underwater tunnels. Everyone thought was mad, so to prove it he opened a hole in them; releasing a veritable torrent of sharks!

While initially he was rather excited to have his theory proven—dismissing years of cajoling from fellow academics—the highly aggressive sharks have since become quite the nuisance. They are, after all, destabilizing the ecosystem, preventing farmers from visiting their oyster farms or fishing, eating all the whales, attacking ships… etc, etc.

As the passage you seek is easiest by ship, you begrudgingly accept. The wizard insists on paying you with a bag of rainbow, supposedly magic jellybeans. He also emphasizes that he doesn’t want you to kill the sharks, just seal them away like before—where they can live in their own microcosm. The wizard then equips you with strange shoes, shaped like seal flippers, as well as three magical orbs to place around the first cavern which will collapse it when the word “Zimzalabim” is said. Lastly, he casts a spell that enables you to breathe and fight in the water as you would on land—though it only lasts for 24 hours.

Before you leave, a villager pulls you aside and discreetly offers a large bag of gold to destroy the sharks inside the cavern network instead. He’s seen the destruction they can do, and doesn’t trust that the blighters won’t escape again.

The ancient sharks are huge. But when you arrive at the entrance to the underwater caverns, you see that the ones inside are even larger—so large they couldn’t leave through the hole the wizard blasted. It appears to be a breeding ground, and a colossal shark is within the area that you’ll have to place the charges.

DM’S NOTES: The underwater cavern network is close to the surface as the sharks thrive in warm, shallow waters. The rocky ceiling is porous, so sunlight still filters down through much of it. The caverns themselves also contain ancient species of giant squid and other whales, which feed upon the smaller fish, shrimp, and—of course—each other.

Free TTRPG battlemap of an Underwater Coral Village

The last thing you remember is being thrown off the deck of a ship. White noise as you splashed into churning ocean waves, followed by sudden, deafening silence and a high-pitched ringing in your ears. You sunk down into the frothing sea, your lifeblood leaking like crimson ink into the water; tattered clothes drifting in the currents…

You wake, surprised to be alive, in a bed within a small hut—breathing water. A merwoman, noticing you, shyly explains that her people rescued you from the wreckage. To save your life they dissolved a magical pearl beneath your tongue, allowing you to breathe water. When they brought you to this underwater coral village, she wrapped your wounds with healing seaweed. You’ve been asleep for days, and she suggests you remain here for a few more until you’re healed.

As you slowly recover, an elderly merman gives you tours of the town. It’s much larger than the sparse amount of merfolk within it, and they look thin and dishevelled. Your guide explains how his people have been at war with evil underwater races for years now, and that they’re losing. How, desperate, a band of young soldiers swam down to a ruined temple in search of an ancient weapon. They retrieved it, but something terrible was asleep down there. Something they woke up—the very same monstrosity that felled your ship.

While touring beautiful coral gardens, you overhear a group arguing about the destruction of nearby reefs from the monstrosity. Many insist that something must be done. But an elder barks that they have already discussed this, and the council has decided to leave the monster alone, trusting it will go away.

The next day, however, the monstrosity is sighted close to the village—heading straight for it. There aren’t many warriors left, and the merfolk can see from your body language and possessions that you’re no stranger to combat. They beg you to aid them in defending the town—if you do, they’ll reward you with more, highly valuable magic pearls.

WHAT’S HAPPENING? The monstrosity is the guardian of the ruined temple. It rages across the ocean, searching for the stolen weapon—destroying reefs and ships as it goes. Should you return it, the monster will go back to its slumber in the ruins. However, that would condemn the merfolk to losing the war, and allow the evil races they fight to invade the lands above. But if you don’t return it, the guardian will fight to the death to retrieve it.

Free TTRPG battlemap of a Haunted Orphanage

You arrive at a ruined manor in a dark forest, at the behest of a man who discovered—on his alcoholic father’s deathbed—that the land was his inheritance, from his grandmother. But it has a bad reputation, so he’s paid you to inspect it and ensure it’s safe.

As you step into the overgrown courtyard, the ghosts of five adorable children materialize around you. They whine playfully, begging you to play a game with them. They’ve each hidden an object around the manor, and if you find it and return it to them, you win!

A short boy tells you that, far above, woody fingers clasp onto something that glitters with gold. One of the girls trills how, in the tallest tower, waits something soft, and comforting. A smaller girl adds that, under the water glistens a shining eye. Lastly, the ghost of the tallest boy advises that buried in the rubble, secrets are bound.

Should you find everything and return them, the children will squeal with delight. They’ll thank you, saying that’s the most fun they’ve ever had, and that they’re going to go now; before skipping off into the surrounding woodland and disappearing.

If you miss an item, the child responsible for it will grow angry and attack. If you’ve missed more than one, whichever children have been angered will coalesce into a more dangerous wraith; saying you’re just like the matron, that she didn’t like their games either. The more children there are coalescing, the deadlier the wraith will become.

WHAT’S HAPPENING? The manor used to be an orphanage, run by an abusive matron—the mother of the deceased, alcoholic father. She never let the kids play games, often beating them terribly for doing so. Until, one night, a fire destroyed the building and none survived.

The items the children have sent you to find are a golden pocket watch in the eagle’s nest, a teddy bear wrapped up in the spider’s nest, and a tiger’s eye gem in the flooded basement.

The last item, buried in a pile of rubble, was the journal of the orphanage’s matron. It details her struggles with the devilish, willfully misbehaving children who made her beat them. They knew no obedience, she writes, and surely would fail as adults in such a harsh world if she did not discipline them.

Free TTRPG battlemap of a Bleakbarrow’s Broken Bridge

You’ve been paid by a worried father to find his missing son. He accepted a challenge with the other men to race to the nearest town to collect a token for a lady. Whoever collected it and returned it to her first would win her hand in marriage, as well as a considerable inheritance.

The problem is, this was days ago and all the other men are already back, without the package. He suspects his foolhardy son took a dangerous shortcut through the mountains, known as Bleakbarrow’s Bridge. No-one knows what’s up there, only that those who wander through it never return. He wants you to recover his son and bring him home safely. Or his body, so that he may give him the burial rites he deserves.

WHAT’S HAPPENING? The man’s son, being of a rather thin build, planned to outwit his brawny opponents by taking the shortcut through the mountains. This would have been a good idea if his belief that the other villagers were overly superstitious were actually valid.

While he made the first crossing safely at daytime and managed to collect the package from the far village, unfortunately for him his second crossing was at dusk. While he attempted to return via the broken bridge, the giant spiders who were nesting beneath it ambushed him.

Luckily for him, he can still be saved. He is paralysed and cocooned within the lair of the spiders, but still alive. For now. Unfortunately for you, however, the package dropped off him and fell deeper into the lair. Should you cut him loose, he begs you to try find it.

If you follow him you’ll find lots of loot on the dead bodies, as well as spider eggs which start hatching at the disturbance. Should the man be returned to the village safely with the package he’ll claim the lady’s hand in marriage—they did, after all, plan the challenge for his success, so he could finally win acceptance from her disapproving father.

Free TTRPG battlemap of an Excavated World Seed Spaceship

A mudslide exposed this cave and it’s since become an essential excavation site. You’ve been paid by a scholar to escort him to this remote location from a city, several days travel away. He was invited to join the excavation as the best expert they could find to help them understand what they’ve uncovered.

When you arrive, the site seems deserted. Venturing inside you are attacked by archaeologists covered with glowing blue and purple plants, their skin matching in colouration and pulsing with specs of light.

Deeper in, more people are kneeling before a pale, glowing bulb. Plants and flowers are slowly growing over them, but they are not yet as covered as the other archaeologists who first attacked. Their glazed eyes turn towards you as their mouths begin to rasp words…

WHAT’S HAPPENING? The excavation has uncovered an ancient spaceship, one of many sent by aliens to terraform various planets and make their environment habitable. However, this ship crashed and the Seed couldn’t spread life. Now that it’s been exposed to the surface, the Seed is determined to fulfil its purpose of making the planet habitable for its creators—regardless of the fact that life has since evolved.

The Seed is telekinetic and calls to the minds of surrounding lifeforms to kneel before it and slowly become covered by plants. It can talk with words through the humans it is in the process of changing, but the others roaming the excavation site are too far gone to speak.

It can only communicate its purpose directly via telepathic visions, such as a barren planet, the ship landing, and life blooming across the world’s surface. If the Seed is killed, the surrounding plant life and the growths on the archaeologists will shrivel and die. However, only those still kneeling near the Seed are unchanged enough to survive it.

The Seed has first created guards to protect itself, but plans to send those kneeling before it out into the world to spread itself further. When the flowers on their backs bloom with glowing white spores, they will spread and begin to change the rest of the planet.

Free TTRPG battlemap of a Cosmic Crystal Spaceship

You are invited to test a new prototype spaceship, said to be the fastest between worlds. Built by an elite guild of dwarves, it utilises a new crystal technology that’s powered by the solar winds. They absorb the energy and release it as motion, but the ship’s true strength is its ability to jump between planes! It fazes between them by warping reality around it.

Once onboard with a representative from the guild, you sail deep into the Ocean of Night. You watch in awe as the other vessels sailing the solar winds quickly fall behind. Then your guide initialises the first inter-dimensional jump, and everything becomes blurry; edges fuzzy and undefined.

Suddenly, clarity returns with sharp crispness. You are somewhere completely different, staring at a planet comprised majorly of water, a steady stream of ships sailing by it. The dwarf grins and manipulates the controls again. Once more everything becomes blurry, before clearing up to see a larger planet of stone and burning lava, surrounded by multiple moons.

After a third jump, you find yourself staring out at a dark, uncharted expanse of the Sea of Night. There are no planets to be seen, nor other vessels. The dwarf goes to initiate another jump, but nothing happens. He frowns, staring at the controls. He checks a device hanging off his belt. According to the reading, there should be plenty of solar wind to power the crystals.

However, if the ship’s display is correct, it’s losing power—and not just for an interdimensional jump. If you don’t figure out why, the ship will lose all power and you’ll be stuck adrift in the uncharted territories.

WHAT’S HAPPENING? Interdimensional parasites that feed on the energy of the crystals have been attracted to the ship and boarded during fazes. They are a glowing white ooze that pass through the walls and floors to coat the crystals, destroying them as they absorb the energy.

You must hunt them down before it’s too late. But they are hard to kill, as they—like the ship—faze between dimensions.

A short, balding nobleman has paid you to pick up a potion from The Temple of Love that will restore his romantic vigor, despite his old age. He’s doing so for his younger wife, who heard about the potion from her relationship guidance sessions with the head priest at the temple.

He really wants to make this night special for his wife, as it’s the yearly Day of Love. She’s been putting in so much extra effort to rekindle the spark in their marriage, dressing nicer, asking him when he’ll be home more, trying exciting new things in bed… He really wants to make this wonderful for her. This potion is the last thing he needs to top off his arrangements.

When you arrive at the temple the head priest, Roberto, greets you warmly. He is over six foot, with long brown hair, tanned skin, rippling muscles and a most spectacularly hairy chest. He invites you inside, as they are performing their annual celebration of this Day of Love—once it is complete, he will get you the potion you require.

You join a crowd of men and women from the town below further in, who are watching two priestesses sing prayers and throw flowers to the statues of the Goddess of Love. But, as Roberto enters, one of the attending women steps forward. She loudly proclaims that she can’t stand the secrecy anymore, that she loves Roberto. Her husband, still in the crowd behind her, lets out a roar.

Roberto’s magnificent tan pales as a second woman steps forward, then a third, then a fifth, all claiming that that they, too, love Roberto. The women, looking around and seeing each other, begin to start fighting amongst themselves. But Roberto’s eyes are fixed on the seething mass of husbands surging towards him, with murder in their eyes.

WHAT’S HAPPENING? Roberto has been doing his duty by the Goddess of Love with most of the unsatisfied wives in the town—including that of the man who hired you, who has no idea what his wife has done.

While resupplying from a sail across the Ocean of Stars, you are approached by a young woman wearing a sky-blue hooded robe. Noting that you are well armed and handle yourself like you know how to use such weapons, she proposes a VERY well paid job; assassination.

She claims to come from a moon called Alina, though it was renamed to Hedonia after the Pirate King came to power. He killed many of the men, raising their children to be loyal to him and forcing the women to become Ladies of the Night. The moon is a popular vacation spot now, known for its eternal celebrations, loud music, and wide selection of cheap intoxicants. Few know the dark story behind it, or see the homeless children and starving addicts that are left in the wreckage of the constant parties.

She escaped the takeover as a young girl, when her religious brothers and sisters fled with sacred artifacts to protect. But she vowed to herself all those years ago that if the time ever came, she would kill the Pirate King and free her mother, who was left behind. Now, almost a decade later, that day has come—only, her people cannot sacrifice the able bodies she needs to succeed, as their primary duty is protecting the artifacts. That’s why she needs you.

The Pirate King rarely leaves his Chambers of Commerce, but a few days from now he will join a parade down to the docks, where he will then catch a starship to the planet below for negotiations. That, the young woman says, will be the perfect time to kill him.

He will be escorted to the docks with several bodyguards, wherein you will have approximately a minute to assassinate him before his vessel docks and he escapes.

You find a middle-aged man lying on a forest road, clasping his bloody hands over a stab wound in his gut. Lying next to him is the cold body of a golden retriever—you can see the blood where she dragged herself from where she was injured, so she could be close to him when she died.

Left for dead after a brutal robbery by bandits, the man begs you to hunt them down and kill the robbers for what they did. He had been on his way to sell a family heirloom to buy medicine for his mother. Not only did they kill his Lola, they stole his hope of healing his mother as well.

When they left, he heard a woman with fiery red hair and a red-wolfskin cape tell the group that their next stop was the Flying Fish tavern for drinks. She was the one who the bandits gave the heirloom to.

Arriving at the tavern, you hear loud howling coming from two tables of heavily armed teenagers. They are joking about a man and his bitch who was stupid enough to not pay for their protection… But the woman the man described isn’t there.

WHAT’S HAPPENING? The leader of the bandits is a low-level fire mage, who instills the young men with the confidence they need to commit their crimes. She is seductive and charming. In her honor, her followers call themselves the Red Wolves.

While her minions are off getting drunk in the tavern, she is selling the heirloom to an antiquarian on the other side of Belford’s Crossing. If you interrogate the men in the tavern they’ll put up a fight but eventually tell you where she is. If you kill them, you’ll need to ask the other witnesses.

Free TTRPG battlemap of a God’s Shrine

A friendly young man wearing colorful patchwork clothes with a wooden staff approaches you for help. He needs to complete a ritual at an ancient worship site and claims to be the descendant of a forgotten deity. He says he can hear the god whispering to him, in his mind. He pauses often in the conversation, making snarky comments to someone who isn’t there, joking, or laughing merrily.

He explains that the ritual will allow him to fully inherit his godly powers, however there are evil cultists who guard the site. Should you help him past and complete the ritual, he will grant you a wish. He also claims he can perform miracles, but when he waives his hand to show you nothing happens and he instead bursts out in laughter; wiping tears from his eyes.

Arriving at the site you see armed figures in plate armor standing at different points. Each wears a different metal mask, shaped into the calm faces of old men or women. As soon as they see the young man, however, they yell that the Forbidden One has arrived and begin to shoot arrows at him. The man squeals and ducks behind a rock, covering his head with his hands.

WHAT’S HAPPENING? The “cultists” are an order of academic knights, descended from those who nearly eradicated the old god from the world. They thought they had killed all the mortal descendants of his bloodline generations ago, until they received a prophecy about one who had survived and would attempt to reincarnate the god near this date.

They espouse reason, mathematics, and order. If the players try to communicate the cultists will claim their ancestors fought long and hard to eradicate the god. They say you don’t understand the chaos your actions will release should you help the young man. That, despite his kindness, he needs to die so the god can never return.

If you kill the young man, flowers the color of his patchwork clothes will grow up around his body and the statue of the god will crumble. Should you fend off the cultists and help him instead, he will prance around with his staff; beating the knights merrily while yelling nonsensical things at them.

Once the ritual is complete his personality will become even more exuberant and his speech will make even less sense. He will grant your party’s wishes, only each one will manifest in unexpected yet positive ways—after all, you have just reincarnated the god of madness. Once the wishes are complete, he will disappear in a puff of purple smoke and sparks.
