Free TTRPG battlemap of a The Living Manor

You arrive in a town surrounded by cloying mist and greyish, decaying trees. Water pools in your footsteps and seeps out of the wagon-wheel ruts left in the thick mud of the road. Timbers on buildings are spongy with rot, and the mortar in stone walls has been worn away; allowing the damp breeze to whistle through the cracks.

The people here move slowly, with dark circles under their eyes. The tavern is awash with a warm orange glow, and—seeking to buy supplies—you enter. Water drips from loose shingles on the ceiling and the stench of unwashed bodies, hard liquor, and vomit drifts over to you. It comes from an old man in torn, dirt-covered rags with bloodshot eyes, huddling in the corner with a near-empty bottle.

An old woman, seeing your adventuring gear, intercepts you. Her silver hair is tied in a neat bun and her red dress is worn, but clean and lovingly kept. There is a spark in her green eyes. She offers to buy you a bowl of hot stew if you listen to a proposal and will pay you handsomely if you accept.

She can’t stand to watch the life being sucked out of this town any longer. Nobody else believes her, but it was different when she was a little girl. The forests were lush, the fields green. The town was alive with trade and each spring they would have the most wonderful celebration. People would travel from all around to see it.

That all changed when the manor burned down. The family who founded the village had lived there, you see. And they were loved. But one day their baby boy went missing. Their oldest son, about six, claimed he’d seen one of the house staff handing him to a stranger. When no-one would tell them who gave the child away, they began torturing, then executing, their loyal workers—claiming they’d conspired to kidnap their baby and that they wouldn’t stop until he was returned.

The reality that those parents wouldn’t believe was no-one knew where the babe was. None had seen him. But the family just wouldn’t listen, and the bloodshed was immense. Far too many good people died.

And then, when they took a group of villagers to interrogate, there was talk of an uprising. After nights passed and those villagers didn’t return, the ones who were left marched up to the mansion. They locked the family inside and burned it to the ground…

Ever since then life has slowly drained away from this area. Slowly, so slowly almost no-one noticed, the produce began to rot in the fields, waves of pestilence struck, and livestock began to look thin and half-starved.

The old woman looks you in the eye and asks you to go up to that old mansion. To find the source of the curse and destroy it, once and for all. As a reward, she will give you a golden broach that has been passed down through many generations of her family. She takes it out from a hidden pocket, unwrapping it carefully. Delicate gold petals surround an emerald, forming the shape of a flower.

Eyeing the pricey reward, you accept. At that moment, the drunk staggers to his feet and insists that he’ll come with you. He claims he was a groundskeeper there as a lad and knows the area well. That he was never able to pay his respects to those who died and can act as a guide up the treacherous path.

You shrug and accept. He doesn’t speak much on the trip up to the manor, being slow to answer questions and often responding with grunts, not words.

The stench of the burned-out shell of the mansion reaches you before you see it, overpowering that even of the drunk. It smells like damp ash and decomposing flesh, causing you to gag and draw your shirt up over your nose. The drunkard pales and slows, letting you take the lead and lagging behind.

A few steps into the building the floor crumbles beneath you, but you manage to step back. Beneath you beats a decomposing heart, surrounded by writhing, rotting flesh. Thick tendrils of the tissue slide over the edge, leaving smears of blood in their wake, seeking to drag you into the pit and subsume you into itself.

You slash the tendrils with your sword, ducking beneath their searching forms and evading their grasp. It becomes a dance that you lose yourself in, blood from the horrible limbs spraying throughout the room. Breathing heavily from the combat, you slip on the slick tiles and can feel your heart leap into your mouth as you plunge into the pit.

You can feel the hot, wriggling mass of limbs pulsing beneath you, some of them wrapping around your neck, others your armpits. Desperate, you writhe around just enough to stab your blade through the heart beside you. It shudders, and as you wrench your blade out a jet of blood follows. The heart leans to one side, deflating, and the limbs clench; strangling you.

Just as you begin to see sparks dancing on the edge of your vision, another spark drifts past your nose. Orange, real. The limbs slacken and you feel yourself sinking as the flesh dissolves into embers, until nothing is left but ash. Feeling tiles beneath your body, you stand on shaking legs.

Standing over where the heart was, you see the bones of a baby boy. Footsteps ring out behind you and you turn to see the drunk, who rushes past you sobbing, before kneeling and cradling the bones in his arms.

The mists surrounding the town lift and the grey skies turn blue. Sunlight streams down through the remaining rafters, and a lone bird begins to sing.

The man, between sobs, explains that the baby was his younger brother and that he was responsible for the massacre. He’d been jealous as a boy and had been rough with him—he’d never meant to kill him! When he’d realised what he’d done, he’d hidden the body here, in the hidden passages only he had found. In his panic, he had told his parents he’d seen his brother taken by the maid—he didn’t think they would do what they did.

He’d been hiding down here when the villagers burned the house down… it’s the only way he escaped. He has been living in torment ever since. Now, with the curse lifted, he feels he can finally begin to redeem himself.

    NOTES:

The reward the old lady offered is the Broach of Clearsight, which increases the perception and memory of those who wear it.

If the party refuses the drunkard, he will sneak up to the manor using a different route.

Should the planets on the mechanical model be aligned correctly, they will open a secret stairway leading to the heart.

Free TTRPG battlemap of a Shadowy Ravensfall Prison

An old woman claims her son was falsely accused and sent to Ravensfall Prison. There he died, apparently having choked to death on a fishbone—but they never returned his body. She has spoken to others who have had loved ones convicted, and many of them died similarly unusual deaths.

She has paid you and your friends to commit a minor offense, so you’ll be arrested and able to learn what’s really going on, from inside the prison. She has also paid off an official, so that a week from now the charges will be dropped and you’ll all be released.

Once inside the prison, you begin to hear rumors. Your main contact, a middle-aged man with two fingers missing, tells you that almost everyone here has gaps in their memories. The next time you try to find him however, he is gone.

A couple of days later, two of your friends disappear. Their cells are empty. Other prisoners report having seen guards escort them beyond a locked metal door, and the next day, they come for you.

You are taken through a long corridor and placed in another cell. You can see your friends across from you. Before you can figure out what is happening, however, guards enter and take one into yet another room. You hear their screams from beyond thick, metal doors…

Hours later, they are dragged back into their cell. They don’t remember what happened. To make things worse, it’s now your eighth day in the prison and no one has come to free you.

What’s happening? The prison warden is in the process of creating a Philosopher’s Stone. He keeps the first page of the recipe and his varying results in a secret room, but the recipe is incomplete. Because of this, he is trying to figure out how to finalize the stone’s creation through experiments involving the prisoners, and transmutation.

He ensures they don’t remember the painful tests through placing a drop of memory-erasing liquid in his prisoners eyes, once they’re strapped in.

The corpse of your contact remains in his “work” chamber. In the desk of his personal quarters there is also a letter, informing the warden that the corrupt official who was willing to accept bribes to pardon valuable prisoners has been dealt with as per his request.

Free TTRPG battlemap of a Akari’s Refuge

Weary from your journey along the steep, frozen road, you are glad to arrive at Akari’s Refuge. It is well known amongst those who traverse the mountain range, and is protected against the harsh snow storms that occasionally descend.

Akari, a beautiful young woman with long, white hair emerges, wearing a monk’s kimono. She welcomes you inside her small home for warm jasmine tea and sweet mochi. When you are finished, she sets the table with many little bowls and plates of delicious hot food, and invites you to enjoy the meal.

Afterwards, as you leave her home and enter the courtyard, you begin to feel extremely drowsy. Spider legs the length of Akari’s body emerge from her back, and you hear the echoes of many feet scuttling throughout the surrounding tunnels—heading in your direction.

Spiders the size of small dogs emerge. Akari smiles and shrugs, “My children need to eat as well.”

What’s happening? The real Akari was killed weeks ago by a Jorogumo; a giant, female spider that can take the shape of seductive women. The monster assumed Akari’s form and has been using her refuge as a way to lazily feed upon the travelers who arrive, thanks to its good reputation.

She poisoned the main meal with a slow-acting agent and has now invited her small-spider children to partake of THEIR meal, as well.

If you explore the spider-tunnels to their end, you’ll find egg chambers filled with bodies encased in cocoons. Among them is the corpse of a woman with long, white hair wearing a gold hairpiece and clutching an ivory serving spoon. The spoon is blessed, and makes food cooked with it tastier; restoring extra health when consumed.

‘Stop before it’s too late! This is against our traditions!’ You hear an old man yell. Turning, you see him pushed down by a soldier. ‘You don’t understand what you’re doing!’ Pleads the scraggly-looking man, struggling to rise. ‘If you continue to over-fish like this, you’ll break our accord!’

The soldier laughs and glances at her team, who are busily loading crates and barrels onto a cart. ‘Your superstitions won’t protect us from this war, only our allies will. Now, begone hermit!’

‘I arrived too late,’ the man whimpers as you hear a rushing noise. Turning, you’re drenched with a tall wave. Blinking away water, you glimpse a silvery-green tail, as long as several men and nearly as thick. It disappears amidst the houses ahead of you, breaking them apart and leaving floating timber in its wake…

What’s happening? Generations ago refugees fled a tyrant, traversing treacherous mountains to survive. It appeared they would starve until they found the lake, but when they cast nets a huge, green Asian Lung dragon emerged; it’s eyes glowing white, its long body coiling and twisting like a serpent’s.

The refugees believed the monster would be their death. Instead, the dragon spoke to them, saying they could fish and even find sanctuary in the lake, so long as they only took what they needed to survive, and no more. So the village was founded.

Generations later, their pact with the dragon has fallen into superstition. Caught between two warring nations, the villagers chose to increase their production and provide supplies to the stronger army, in return for protection against the aggressing nation.

The hermit, who lives alone on the far side of the lake, has often claimed to have conversations with the dragon, but the villagers dismissed him as delusional. A friend to the Lung, he was gifted a Cosmic Pearl, which he uses to magically replenish his food stores once a day. If the dragon survives, he will gift it to you in thanks for a peaceful resolution.

You’ve been sent to seek the old sensei, an acolyte who long ago left his life to live atop the peaks of mount Akagi. He’s tended to the gardens and small shrine atop the peak with the other acolytes for many decades and guarded a very special secret, one of the first steps required to find the location of the artifact known as the “eye of god”.

However something is wrong, when you reach the peak you begin to smell smoke and the flickering lights of fire begin to show themselves in the distance. When you finally reach the gardens you find bloodied bodies covering the ground. Several bloodied men are guarding the end of the bridge that leads to the old sensei’s shack and refuse to let you past, attacking you if you approach.

When you reach the shack at the top of the gardens, a tall, a scarred man is holding the old bloodied sensei by his neck yelling at him. However when he notices you he drops the man, and prepares himself, laying a hand on his blade swords hilt. He seems upset you’ve managed to make it this far as his soldiers should have dealt with anyone that was going to disturb him.

When defeated, his last words are “The black master will not be pleased…”. The old sensei beckons you forward, he is not long for this world and pleads that you take his secret with you and defend the eye of god from the black master, with this he gives you the first step to finding the eye of god before dying of his magically inflicted wounds from the black sword.

What’s going on? Long ago the old sensei was a powerful and wizened teacher whom taught many promising apprentices at a temple of magic, one of these apprentices however never managed to learn the importance of many of the temples virtues and eventually the old sensei refused to teach him any longer. This infuriated the apprentice, left only to return years later as a powerful necromancer with his own loyal followers, killing the remaining apprentices and forcing the old sensei into hiding after barely surviving.

This apprentice wishes to undercover the location of the eye of god, an artifact that allows you to peer into the afterlife. However it has taken him decades to once again find the old master and send his followers to procure the information from him. The scarred man managed to get this information from the old sensei before his death however if his body is not destroyed other followers will eventually come to reclaim it and the necromancer will resurrect him and retrieve the information.

A poor fish spawning season has had dramatic effects on the fishing villages that dot the coast, cutting their expected fish intake by more than half. Due to this loss, fishermen have had to go further, some even sailing closer to the forbidden isles in search of more bountiful catches.

The water surrounding the isles seemed to have a much higher quantity of fish, their density increasing more and more the closer they come to the isles and yet they still continued to fail to bring in the required amount of fish to feed the villagers.

With little choice left more then a dozen men from the village have taken their ships and sailed directly into the heart of the forbidden isles and have subsequently failed to return to the village. You’ve been begged by the village to go to the forbidden isles and investigate what has happened to the men, to hopefully return them to the village alive and perhaps make the isles safe to fish in or failing that to return with mementos found on their bodies.

What’s going on? A strange ritual has come to pass on the forbidden isles, put into effect by the sirens whom make the isles their home. This ritual is the true reason for the poor fish spawning season, in fact the spawning season has gone just as well as any year, the only difference this year is a large amount of fish living within 100 miles of the forbidden isles have been drawn to the heart of the isles.

This ritual had two goals, to bring in more food for the sirens and their children in the form of fish. But more importantly, to ultimately bring in their favorite food, the flesh of man.

A recluse scholar has sent you to take a sample of a mysterious, green substance beneath the ruins of an ancient city. You must collect it from the original source—a crescent basin, to which he has given you the coordinates based off old blueprints he has.

According to the scholar, the substance will enable him to create wonderful devices that will grow and harvest food, saving hundreds of thousands of lives. When you go to take the sample however, tendrils of the goop reach out towards you, dripping into quivering blobs…

What’s happening? A vanished civilization once sentenced criminals to death by dissolving them into a magical substance that flowed through infrastructure beneath their city. Itused the energy of their souls to power wondrous technologies, making their city a bountiful marvel of the ancient world.

However, as crime dropped due to the horrific consequences, the city’s rules became stricter and stricter, twisting around its inhabitants like a serpent. Eventually people were sentenced for smallthings like forgetting to bow to officials, or missing religious ceremonies.

Sick of living in fear, a mage rose up against the city whose technologies—designed to make lives easier—had begun to cannibalize its people. She spoke out against what was happening, butfor it, her and her followers were sentenced to death.

Despite the agony of her fate, in her last moments she managed to merge her consciousness with the slime—bringing it to life, and destroying the machinery it powered. She couldn’t hold onto herself for long, however, for the magic she had wrought had partially recovered the minds of others lost to the substance.

Thus, the mage’s consciousness faded, and the slime took on a horrible sentience of its own.
