After the dam broke, the lower forest and plains become flooded, slowly turning into swampy marshes. Many fled, abandoning homes and ancient places of worship. This grave was one such place.

Eight statues stand upon large stone pedestals watching over the grave, as well as the remaining coffins of heroes that used to line the ancient walkway.

Bronze plaques in front of the coffins tell the tales of heroes long dead. Now overgrown by small white flowers, this place has been long abandoned until recently when a battle was fought here, bodies of soldiers are scattered among the damp soil, their blood seeping into the ground and flames lick the brush.

Free TTRPG Battlemap – Ruins of the Great Vault

One day a year the ancient manor of the vault appears. It sits above the meandering creek that passes by the village, on a lightly forested hill, its battered form a silhouette on the horizon.

The vault is said to hold treasures and artifacts beyond your wildest dreams, but local folk don’t go near the area anymore for it is said that shadowy figures haunt the hillside ruins, and should you spend to much time close to the ruins you too will become one of them…

This hasn’t stopped foolhardy adventurers from invading the broken manors grounds, keen on unlocking the vault and plundering its treasures.

When you arrive, the ruins lie empty and silent but for the echo of birds in the distance. Down old, stone stairs you find four colored orbs upon damaged pedestals.

Before you is the large iron doors of the great vault. Engraved on it’s surface is a world sliced in half, you can see magma in its core, the trees its surface, the sky above and space with stars beyond that.

The solution to this puzzle is to touch the red orb, then the green orb, then the blue orb and finally the purple orb.

When the vault opens however, a rush of shadows blast past you down the corridor and out of the manor house, leaving only the strange weapons on their altars and great riches behind. When you exit the vault and climb the stairs you’re greeted by several distorted shadowy figures which assail you.

What’s going on? The vault is imbued with an ancient magic which, when the manor was destroyed, was distorted. This distorted magic seems to be teleporting the vault and the ruins with it to new locations every day, maybe even different time periods.

Living creatures caught within the vicinity during this time are consumed by the vault’s magic and, due to the distorted magical effect, turned into evil shadowy apparitions of their former selves.

When the vault was opened these shadowy apparitions were released on the world.

Passages fork off the main tunnel, one leading to a small chamber which then curves to connect to a small cavern full of ice and rubble.A small pool of frozen water can be found under a small overhang as you travel deeper into the cave system, It’s glass like surface perfectly still.The passage curves around and meets with a large cavern where above a rocky structure sits piles of blue crystals.What horrors might lurk in this icy lair?

Threats of death to the King cannot be ignored. His royal Hand has tasked your party to locate their source and extinguish them. For generous pay, of course.

You track rumors of strange happenings to a discrete hideaway in a forest, right on the edge of the kingdom. Once inside, you are set upon by lithe figures in black, wielding daggers, bows, powders, and magical implements.

Should you venture deeper into the death-themed abode, you chance upon an old elven man reading in the library. He will agree that they are plotting to kill the King, but will calmly inform you that this is because the man is the descendant of a usurper.

What’s happening? A long time ago a usurper killed the rightful widowed Queen and made to dispose of her children, too. But thankfully, they escaped. That man was crowned King, while the innocent children struggled to survive on the streets, eventually banding together to form this Order.

Now their children, who have spent their lives preparing for this moment, are ready to take back their rightful places by killing the last descendant of the usurper’s bloodline; the King.

Through something passed down in the blood, the Order is mute. The old elf is not biologically related to the rightful heirs, which is why he can speak. Indeed, he is the one who sheltered their parents initially and taught them the ways of vengeance.

If you’ve killed the other members of the Order, one may yet remain in the secret basement with a throne of skulls. Will you erase their bloodline forever, or assist them in killing the child of the usurper—a child who has done nothing but been born from the wrong father?

A remote village has been affected by a plague that leaves its inhabitants with patchy fur and yellow, ridged claws instead of fingernails. Babies are born with pink tails and heads like rodents, only to be killed by their own mothers. Those who have let them live have suffered from vicious attacks, for the children are not just hideous, but mindless and aggressive.

Now, adults are beginning to lose their memories as well, becoming something different and unrecognizable. It starts with hoarding shiny objects and twitching, before quickly escalating to paranoia and rampant aggression. The worst of them burrow into the soil and seem sensitive to light; coming out at night and hunting the remaining villagers for their worthless, yet reflective, possessions. In this way many friends have had to kill those they once knew to survive.

What’s happening? A magical contaminant has been flowing downstream in the water (if your players have drunk any they may start changing). Bandits have created a mine and refinery for this valuable, green substance upstream, and, due to the danger, are using kidnapped prisoners to dig it out of the underground veins.

The prisoners don’t live long and are usually killed in two weeks due to the rapid changes, unbeknownst to the other captives. The bandits lie to the survivors, telling them that those who are gone have been freed to return to their families. Because they are not entirely heartless, everyone must work a shift of two weeks, before they can leave. This, they claim, is why they have a constant influx of new slaves.

A great curse has been unleashed on the kingdom of man, its epicenter within the lands of the forestfolk. Once-blue skies are ashen and pristine waters run red…

When you track down the source, you find an entity with ram horns crowning an eyeless face, its mouth twisted in a smile of white teeth like shards of broken bone.

What’s happening? When the king of the forestfolk died, preparations were made to crown his eldest son king. However his younger son disputed the elder one’s claim, and the argument resulted in the youth being banished from the tribe.

When the day came for the ceremony, the five village wisemen convened in the sacred grove with the first born son. They began the ritual passed down from generation to generation, painting his face with hues of ocher, reciting ancient words of their people.

Unfortunately this was interrupted by a band of unrecognized men-at-arms, lead by the exiled son. The ritual stopped, the wise men pleaded with the impostor to not spill blood in this holiest of places, for the consequences would be dire.

Unbeknownst to all parties involved, the reason this place was considered holy was because it shared a particular affinity for the outer planes. Spilling blood here would open a portal to those realms.

Disregarding their wisdom, the younger son killed his brother, and as his blood ran into the rivers, the sky darkened and a large figure with reddish skin and horns appeared in front of the altar…

Mist swirls among the tall redwood trees, as the moon rises high in the sky. The thick moss that grows here, gives off an earthy smell and sprawls across the forest floor towards the dirt trade roads, where caravans pass everyday, creating rutted grooves in the muddy roads.

Small wooden palisades surround the road where bloodied bodies lie and at the end a large stone wall blocks your entry into the town, small lanterns swaying gently in the breeze.

A large explosion jolts you from your slumber as the port shakes from the force. The towns streets fill with smoke as houses begin to burn and rumble covers the paths where people huddle for safety. When you enter the streets a man in guardsmen garb comes around the corner clutching his sword and his side, blood dripping between his fingers.

Behind him a women in a colorful shawl stands close, he eyes you up and down noticing your armaments as he falls to one knee coughing blood. After finishing his coughing and wiping blood away from his mouth he straight up demands that you assist him, noting his rank as lieutenant of guard. He explains the women behind him is an important person and may be the target of this monstrous attack.

She must be escorted to the airships at once before the town is to fall, for the information that she carries should it fall to the enemy would, may mean the end of the entire kingdom.

When you get to the docks you see the bodies of several guards men among the ruins and flames as well as several other men walking around with long swords, skewering anyone that is still alive.

Beyond them lies but a few of the remaining functional airships.

What’s going on? The women in the colorful shawl worked as an archaeologist for a wealthy but secretive benefactor whom had paid her a fortune to help unravel the mystery of an ancient portal and the scrolls it was found with. Through her effort she finally figure out it’s function and was horrified. She confided with her employer, who was ecstatic hearing the news, explaining to her that he intended to use this weapon to take over the kingdom or bring it to ruin, to usher in a new age.

It was then she realized she had been fooled into helping bring this weapon back to life, so she fled, destroying what little work she could before leaving.

When she arrived in the town the guard’s didn’t take her story of evil villain who intended on using an ancient super weapon to take over the kingdom seriously, neither the imminent attack she foresaw from this villain in an effort to retrieve her. Instead they put her in a cell as if she was a crazy person.

It was only when the attack began that the lieutenant began to believe her story and couldn’t very well leave her in the cell.

Bricks have fallen from their place in the walls as you traverse the broken corridors, statues ever watchful. You reach a room where it looks like a fountain once was but now only a stagnant pond remains. To it’s left is a room containing many bookshelves and two chests, but a portcullis bars your way.

Behind one of the statues, a crumbling tunnel leads to the sepulcher, marking the graves of long dead dwarven warriors. Stairs lead up from the sepulcher, through a basement storeroom full of old wines and ales, then into the main chamber.

The main chamber holds several exits that lead to other vaults containing long lost goods or weapons, but once again you’re barred by iron bound doors.

One month ago the nightmares started, at first it was only the village’s children who were effected. They had trouble sleeping and would always wake crying, claiming to be tormented by horrific, deformed creatures.

If it was only one or two of them this could have been claimed to be coincidence. However night after night this occurred to each and every child of the village.

The healer of the village at first thought this could perhaps be some type of fever affecting the young but no herbal medicines had any effect on fighting off the nightmares. When help was finally sought from the nearest city, the reply was shocking.

This was not some disease afflicting just the children of this small village but something greater that was afflicting all the children of the kingdom. Soon after this, adults began experiencing these nightmares too.

Now that everyone in the kingdom is being effected by these night terrors, you’ve been put in contact with a strange wizard who will help you track down the source of this affliction and end it before people start getting hurt due to accidents caused by lack of sleep, or before anything else more malicious occurs.

The wizard explains that he believes dreams are fundamentally connected to the divine, he thinks that dreams come from a demi-plane which he seems to have mapped.

He’s able to create a portal to allow you through to this demi-plane to deal with whatever is corrupting the realm but he will be required to stay behind and maintain the portal, for if the portal was to close you may be trapped in a realm of constantly shifting reality, never to return.

When you arrive you notice shifting shadows deep below the platform where you stand and small tendrils of ebony vapor entering the holographic world in front of you. When you get closer a shadowy apparition coalesces in order to stop your advance, tormenting you with horrible visions.

What’s going on? An evil entity has made it’s way into the realm of dreams corrupting the dreams of those on the material realm to weaken the people for a greater threat that is still yet to reveal itself from the shadows.
