News from the north has spread that a new king has come into power over the tribes of the northern peoples and that they intend to lay siege to the fortress of the great gates before heading further south to raid the kingdoms for slaves and gold.

You’ve been tasked with assisting in holding the fortress should it come to that, while others have been sent out in a vessel with a diplomat to try and make peace with this new king before any blood has been shed.

However two days later a small armada of northern ships are sighted on the horizon setting anchor. During that night an alarm is rung. The gates have been breached by a small force of northerners and they’re fighting to kill. Both docks have been taken by the northerners and the gates are wide open but un-damaged, for it seems they were opened from the inside!

After the alarm goes off some of the guards manage to close the gates again but not before larger sailing vessels begin their attack on the fortresses exterior. With the guards busy you’ll need to defend both sides of the inner fortress and protect those firing the cannons from the barbarians that have assaulted the docks.

After the attacking ships have been dealt with and the barbarians have been slain, it will be time to root out a potential traitor who opened the gates to these savages!

Before your travel to the castle you’re warned that the roads to the castle may be dangerous, apparently harpy like creatures have taken up residence on the mountainside and are harassing travelers as well as the local villagers in the valley below. Almost a dozen children have gone missing over the last couple months and these creatures are being blamed.

However, you arrive at the castle unmolested and upon crossing the bridge you notice the heads of many harpies upon stakes lining it’s outer walls. All of the heads but one seem rather small, almost as if they were but hatchlings, their all to human faces eerily like that of human children.

After signing in at the archive you enter the market place, chatter is abound with the sale of goods crafted from materials only found within these mountains. Two small children are practicing sword fighting with wooden weapons on the battlements above and one wearing fine silken clothes.

In the lower markets several men in recently bloodied armor are laughing about what seems to be the extermination of the harpy nest that’s been hassling travelers earlier that day. Apparently the nest only contained one elderly harpy and more than a dozen hatchlings, so the knights dispatched them all in quick fashion. They seem quite proud of themselves, before screaming is heard from the battlements.

A women is pointing towards the sky as a flock of dark figures swoop down attacking those within the castles walls. Some of the adult harpies attack guards and citizens, while others chase down children not to kill but to grab and fly away with. One of these children is the lord’s boy, the child that was playing upon the battlements. You see him struggle as a harpy carries him away. The harpies kill whose they can and kidnap as many children as possible before retreating or retreat if they take to many loses.

After the carnage, the lord who has an injured is heard frantically screaming for his son, he begs you to track down the harpies to save the children that have been kidnapped. He can’t offer any assistance from his guard as many have been injured or killed however he hastily and perhaps foolhardily offers anything you want as a reward. If you go after the harpies on the same day you’ll arrive just in time to interrupt their ritual that will begin the transformation of the children into harpy hatchlings. Saving them from a horrible fate, however if you wait till the next day to go after them you’ll be to late, the children already transformed.

Note: If any of the valley folk accompany you to the castle they will notice that the small heads on the pikes are deformed heads of their children that have gone missing…

After a heavy storm uncovers a pass to a lost city in the mountains, rumors start circulating the countryside, tales of treasure, gold and fame to be found within it’s halls drive you to seek out this ancient place.

You follow the directions given from some locals and after several days travel you arrive at your destination. You enter the halls dispatching small threats that have now made this place their home before finding yourself in a hexagonal room with a ceiling some hundreds of meters above you.

Upon entering however the door closes behind you and the floor starts to rise, transporting you higher into the gloom above. After moving up for some 20 seconds, light begins to peek through the darkness as if two sliding doors are opening above.

The platform continues rising until you’re bathed in sunlight and heat. You stand in an arena of stone, and chains, while flames beat down on you from all around. A crowd of hundreds of men and women cheer from the arenas stands. “May these be worthy!” a desperate man in fine garb calls down from the balcony above before you’re attacked by a group of men wearing minimal leather armor and covered in red tattoos from the other side of the arena.

What’s going on? This place was originally set up long ago as a prison for a great evil that dwelt below however it “vanished” after a massive landslide cut it off from the rest of civilization. The inhabitants had children and their children had children but overtime the prison began to break and the evil began to spread it’s tendrils. Fertility dropped and less children were born each generation and those who were born sometimes suffered horrible defects.

Today only one keeper is left, he stands on the balcony above you, a powerful old wizard focusing on the magic of illusion. After being alone for so long he found refuge only in the study of his peoples magical writings and so he has recreated them as illusions including all the peoples in the arena stands and the men you fight within the arena.

The wizard has also been the catalyst for all of this, after the storm opened the pass once again he sent out magical messages giving rumor to this city and treasures it may hold. He requires heroes with strength of mind to help defeat the evil that will soon be released within the failing prison before his frail body and mind fail him. Will you help him? Or has his grand deception turned you against him?

You’ve heard tales of a man known as “The Eye”, A gifted prophet who has saved the lives of many important heroes throughout the decades, which in turn has lead to the lives of many others being saved in turn. From rumors it appears he is able to both see the future and gift those he sees as worthy with the ability to perceive their own deaths, but only shortly beforehand.

The Eye is a broken man who appears to be close to death, he looks much older than he is, his hair graying and his skin wrinkly, he talks slowly in low tones. He carries on his duty but a great burden appears to weight on him. If you wish to gain his favor, he will sit you down and divine your future, if he sees you will do great things and be a beacon of good, he will bestow upon you his third eye, this is a mark of an eye upon your forehead that fades quickly to leave nothing.

What is the harsh cost to this magic? The Eyes magically foresight comes from a pact he made with a minor lawful evil deity of fate. When a life is saved due to the use of his third eye that he has granted upon someone, he must in turn offer up two souls in exchange to the deity. The Eye obtains souls via the capture of criminals and low-lives by his followers which he then preforms a ritual on in his basement, transferring their souls into his red orb, an artifact given to him by the evil deity.

However this is not how this began. Decades ago a war rage on, threatening the destruction of the entire kingdom. The Eyes wife had been killed and only his two children remained with him. He begged the gods for help and received it. Through his new powers, he foresaw the death of a man who could change the outcome of the war. However without the help of others to capture the souls required to trade for this mans life he was losing hope. When there was but a day left before this important man was to die, The Eye did the unthinkable. He preformed the ritual on his own children, trading their lives for the man’s life.

The Kingdom won the war and many lives were saved, however after this experience The Eye became a broken man, he had damned his own soul in the process and begrudgingly choose to continue on his path. To save heroes who would in turn save others, so that perhaps others in the future would not need to make the same choices as him.

The Eye knowing death will come for him in the next couple of years may plea with you to save his children’s souls from their fate, the only souls who don’t deserve to be where they are. You may also choose to kill The Eye for his evil actions, even if well intentioned. He will not stop you, however his followers will fight to the death, willing to do what it takes for the greater good.

(Those who can see into the ethereal realm can both see the souls within the red orb as well as the mark on anyone’s head who has received the third eye. While you have this mark the next time you’re going to be killed, you instead can replay the turn to make different choices. If you wish to regain this boon you must return to “The Eye”. If the red orb is broken this boon no longer functions.)

Filbert, the groups cleric is known for being a healthy man that loves to tell goodhearted jokes however when meeting him his humor is extremely dark and his laughter a cackling cough. Grax the barbarian whom is known to be a loyal man that would die for his friends, ends up stealing food during dinner from Filberts plate without asking, then threatens his life when filbert protests. All the while Timon’s face never changes from his crooked smile.

If anyone of them are asked where the rest of their adventuring party is they just respond that they’re out on an adventure, clearly.

What’s going on? The manor’s adventuring party recently came into procession of a magic mirror and while trying to discern it’s traits accidentally activated it. This caused the inhabitants of the house to be sucked into the mirror with evils versions of themselves being deposited into the house. The lab of the mad wizard has been ransacked when you arrive and his body lies limp on the ground, smeared blood on the stone tiles read out “Xeros holds the key”, something he must have written before bleeding to death. The ground is cover with broken glass vials, bloodied notes and scribbles, only a heavy wooden desk and a black stone pedestal holding a small glass orb the size of an orange remaining intact. Dark clouds swirl inside it and beneath them fleshy shapes shift slowly around a core.

All hope looks lost in trying to recover the relic you so desperately required from the wizard, however a ragged journal on his desk thankfully has left clues to the location of the relic, apparently the old wizard feared he was in danger and while he did seem a little paranoid, he may have been right this time.

The journal goes on about his various studies on strange topics such as “the medicinal properties of anti-gravity mushrooms”, “Sentient brooms and their predilection towards anti-social behavior” and “how long is an arcane wave length really?” before you finally find a passage that seems to describe a world of living flesh, a parasite and creature from the stars, a small sketch next to the paragraph shows a tangled mess of tentacles and teeth within a small sphere with the tag “Xeros” next to it.

Apparently the wizard trapped this creature long ago to study within a small glass prismatic sphere, a little world onto itself, reducing the size of anything put within it by 10,000 fold. The key to enter this world is neatly written within the page “touch the orb and recite the words Entara’delmorana, to return recite to words Extara’delmorana”.

Once you recite the words while holding the orb, you’re teleported to the surface of Xeros where a massive tentacle reaching up from the dark abyss holds the relic you seek. However when attempting to approach it masses of tendrils reach up to engage you.

As an extra you can have the wizards murderer also be on the surface of Xeros waiting for you to weaken him before stealing the relic for himself!

Every ten years nine people of varying social status and background go missing in the city never to return and the tenth year has just come again. However this time someone dear to you has gone missing, whether they’re family, a friend or even an innkeeper, they’re gone and with little trace. You must track them down, perhaps it’s not to late to find them before they’re gone forever.

What’s going on? Long ago when this city was founded the people could not know the true nature of the location they had picked. Great horrors slumbered beneath them within the great networks of crypts and vaults that lie below the cities ground. Eventually the cities architects uncovered the ancient vaults and were ordered to open them by the nobility so that they many claim any treasures that were stashed within.

The clerics of the city begged them not to, citing ancient writings they had found with the tunnels, telling tales of ancient evils locked within the vaults, but the nobles didn’t listen and through greed for what they may contain released these evil creatures.

Every night the creatures would make their way into the city from the crypts, killing more innocents and only when the prince was killed in his bed did the nobles come to the clerics begging their help to fix what they had caused. The clerics devised a spell that would once again lock away the horrors but it had a price.

Ten souls would have to give their lives in a blood ritual to once again seal the vault, nine of them could be anyone, however the tenth would have to be of the blood line that was responsible for the opening of the vault and every ten years the spell would need to be repeated.

After this event the nobility took it upon themselves to find higher virtue, every ten the oldest among the nobility volunteers to be the cities sacrifice and keep it’s people safe for the mistake their family once made.

The person you wish to find has been randomly chosen to be one of the other nine that must be sacrificed and is being held in the undercity undergoing a purifying rite for the next week before the sacrifice is to be made, they’re treated kindly but have been made aware of what must happen to them for the good of the city.

Ten years ago people started to go missing in the town of Murkmire, the mayor didn’t take it very seriously, stating they probably just got lost out in the salt marsh but less than a week later Murkmire was a ghost town.

No one knows what occurred there but local rumor says the town is cursed, however a young women claiming to be the daughter of the captain of the sea’s spirit, a large fishing vessel that harbored at Mirkmire wishes to find out the truth. She’s hired you to travel to Murkmire and undercover the secret horrors that now lie below the waves.

What’s going on? Just over ten years ago the sea’s spirit hauled in a strange artifact with a catch of fish. The captain took possession of it and over the next week he and his crew began a horrible transformation. First their minds decayed, then their bodies. They became horribly disfigured, growing gills, and webbing between their hands, and then the hunger began.

After eating through all of their fish they turned their gaze to the town of Murkmire and over the next few days during the night, the crew of the sea’s spirit would sneak into Murkmire and kidnap people to eat.

This ended and a new horror began when a large storm swept the sea’s spirit directly into Mirkmires docklands, destroying piers and bridges and lodging the ship in place. With no where to go the creatures aboard the ship departed into the town feasting on the residents while thunder and the storm muffled their screams.

The monsters of the sea’s spirit still live in their boat to this day, never traveling to far from the artifact that changed them into what they became…

The captain still carry’s a watertight locket of his daughter and his wife around his neck, this can be used to identify him.

While exploring the town you may find a journal that discusses the captain of the sea’s spirit as acting strangely and carrying a small ebony statue around at all times before his crew and himself went missing along with his ship. Three days later the people of Murkmire started going missing as well, being fed on by the now monstrous crew of the sea’s spirit.

If the artifact is destroyed the crew of the sea’s spirit will be cured of their curse, their monstrous flesh being shed to reveal the human within, but what of the horror’s these men committed during their time cursed? Can they be redeemed?
