A strange rot has infested the local farms, destroying vegetable produce and injuring those living who breath its spores. It was first noticed one month ago, when local hunters reported strange, small brown mushrooms with bio-luminescence and roots like veins. They appeared to be growing out of the entrances of caverns, leading to vast networks which run beneath the entire region…

Since then the rot has spewed fourth, contaminating the farms and forests above. The locals have tried multiple methods of cleansing it, but the infestation resists; threatening starvation.

You’ve been tasked to venture into the vast network of caverns to find its source, and perhaps, a solution.

What’s happening? Known for their amazing selection of exotic fungus, mountain dwarves export their mushrooms to the kingdoms of man. When a strange rot took hold within their growth tunnels, everything changed.

They tried everything they could think of to purge the rot, but none succeeded and the growth continued to spread throughout the underground network. Realizing that their efforts to contain the deadly infestation had failed, they sealed the contaminated tunnels so their city could survive.

Unknown to them, the mass continued to grow beneath their city, and sought other outlets.

The heart of this plague is a being who embodies living rot. Dark and twisting veins tie together carcasses of the dead, spreading spores and nutrients for its parasitic growths. Smaller creatures have broken off from it, wandering the tunnels and waiting for other living beings to incorporate into their own, rotting forms.

If one were to destroy the original, largest entity, perhaps the network of fungi would, too, fade…

Free TTRPG Battlemap – Mad Professor’s Hideout

A man accidentally bumps into you at the marketplace, dropping his notes. Shocked, he flees into the crowd. When you pick them up, they’re stained with blood.

You can make out “experiments…. have failed…. It wants more, more than I can give…. she will die if I don’t…. the butchers don’t have enough left to sell me, not even all of them in the city, though Joran cites me as his best customer…. animals were never as effective…. she cries with hunger” Then there are some liter measurements, seeming to require more and more liquids with reduced “output”.

The last note reads “If only I could contact whoever created it originally…. But we were lucky to stumble into the workshop as it is”. You learn of the man’s location from the butcher, who claims the Professor was never the same after his wife died. ‘It was a strange ailment, his family had. His daughter was ill with it, too.’

The home is empty, but there is a hidden stairway in the consultancy. It stinks of blood and off meat, ending in a large, underground workshop. Within, you find a 13 year old girl kneeling over the man from the market, weeping.

When she notices you, she turns around, her blood-covered face streaked with tears…

What’s Happening? After his wife died from a weak heart, the Professor discovered his daughter suffered the same condition. One fateful night he stumbled into a hidden workshop beneath his house. Reading the notes within, he discovered the crimson machine could lead to “ascension to immortality”. The only requirement was blood.

Feeding his own into the machine, he used the transfusion to successfully cure his daughter. Only, the effects wore off and she needed more. Soon, even animal blood didn’t work. By then his daughter had come to crave the transfusions, and, tortured by her pleas of insatiable hunger, he kidnapped and killed three people. Horrified by what he had done, he refused to do it again, not realizing that he had turned his daughter into a vampire.

Ravenswood was once a lush and beautiful forest, full of woodland animals and prized within the realm, however after an ancient seal was breached, that all changed. A rot set in, corrupting the woods and the creatures that lived within, shaping their bodies into horrific caricatures of their previous forms, while the trees wept black sap and their leaves crumpled and died.

You’ve been hired by a one Lord Ralbruct to enter this woodland and find an old tomb belonging to the great sir Robert and the order of the rose. Inside you’ll find his equipment along with his last will and testament as well as some other documents. The lord who has hired you to find this tomb is fine with you keeping the equipment and whatever else you find within the tomb but desperately wants the will and other documents.

What’s happening? When sir Robert and the rest of the order of the rose were killed, the king had this special tomb built to house their bodies as well as their other belongings, including a deed to a large castle that the order of the rose held.

This castle was given to another lord over Lord Ralbruct however and when the belongings of the order where moved to the tomb the deed was misplaced. Without the deed the other lords hold over the castle is shaky and thus Lord Ralbruct hopes to obtain the deed and thus challenge this other lord to to ownership of the castle.

Built long ago this ancient structure now lies dormant. Pedestals, beams, platforms and walkways have crumbled over the ages leaving a dangerous trial that few are willing to attempt, for to fall would certainly lead to death.

Roots and ferns have grown over some of the old stone floors, while a supernatural icy formation covers others and yet still, eternal fires burn far below the platforms and a large fiery orb hovers complacently filling the chambers with light and heat giving combatants an additional challenge.

You’ve been tasked by the city guard to investigate and shut down a smuggling ring which is responsible for bringing in and distributing a substance that has recently become illegal. The drug has been connected with a string of violent incidents and a marginal increase in indecent exposure.

The city guard is unable to inform you to exact nature of the substance but those who have been caught using it call it “Red Devil” and have been found in the sleazier parts of the city.

When you manage to track the smugglers to a small cove just outside the city. You’re meet by a merry band of men celebrating within a cavern who are quick to draw their swords when you approach.

Inside the barrels you find the so called drug… fermented crab meat!

Further into the cave you also come across a man in rags locked in a cell. He begs for you to let him out, explaining that he was in charge of the importing of the fermented crab meat but when it was banned he decided to hire on some smugglers as the profit was to good to give up. However when the smugglers he had hired figured out they could run the entire operation themselves they threw him into a cell.

What is going on? A powerful merchant who had previously cornered the market on exotic aphrodisiacs, was shocked when his products stopped selling. A new aphrodisiac had been selling on the streets, fermented crab meat. The merchant used his connections within the cities authorities to get it banned, but it only increased it’s value as it started to be smuggled into the city.

Free TTRPG Battlemap – Shadowfell Toll Station

A supernatural darkness has crept over the kingdom, consuming small towns and villages. The darkness seems to warp those within it, distorting them into horrible creatures. You’ve been tasked to find the origin of this affliction, which seems to be coming from the depths of the forest and to stop it.

Before you leave, a cleric approaches and hands you a small artifact. He explains that the artifact releases an aura of light similar to daylight and that you should never leave it’s presence as he postulates that leaving the light most likely will result in you being changed, like so many others.

You take the trade road and final reach the edge of the darkness, here the trees are rotted and dying, gnarled roots permeate the grounds and an ever present gloom pervades the air, blocking out the sky.

You continue further into the forest making sure to always stay within the safety and comfort of the artifacts light, when you finally reach a small oozing stream, it’s riverbed containing broken bones and before you, your first challenge.

The king’s men used to keep guard in this old toll station, taking tolls to help maintain the roads and keep them safe. You’ll need to raise the boom gate to continue further into the forest however when you enter the toll station you noticed a disheveled man is scribbling notes on a book and repeating garbled words to himself, his eyes but empty sockets. He ignores you.

If you try and raise the boom gate, he screams out and tries to stop you but his words make no sense. The boom gate’s rusty chain grinds as the gate starts to rise and takes five rounds to be fully raised. During this time horrific creatures emerge from the nearby forest and assault the toll station.

What’s Happening? Through a catastrophe the realm of shadows is bleeding into the material realm, it’s origin being a temple deep within the woods.

While enjoying the renowned sausages within the tavern you noticed a large crowd gathering outside, staring upward. When investigated you discover a strange looking reddish purple “portal” has appeared over the building on the other side of the street.

It remains stable for some minutes before suddenly increasing in size as a wave of small impish creatures emerge from it’s center sending the crowds that had come to watch screaming in terror. The small creatures proceed to fly around harassing citizens and damaging property before a large demonic being appears from the portal, jumping down right in front of you.

During this time if you listen closely you may be able to hear chanting coming from the building across the street.

What’s going on? A mystic lives across the street and often tells fortunes as well as performs séances where she allows people to speak with their dead family members or ancestors.

However this time something has gone wrong. When she tried to open a link to her clients ancestors, rather than being replied to by human relatives, a demonic entity answered her call. This is because the client, unbeknownst to themselves actually has an ancient demonic heritage. The demonic being then used this link to begin the process of opening a portal between the material plane and the hells.

While the mystic is trying to end the séance and thus destroy the portal to the hells, they’re unable to do so without outside help as long as the large demonic being has control over her.

Free TTRPG Battlemap – Clockwork City Prison

An ancient scroll speaks of a powerful weapon from the fabled Clockwork City, waiting deep within the mountains. It has lain abandoned for centuries after a catastrophe destroyed its dwarven creators.

Despite the lack of life within this place, the clocks and cogs of the city have continued to churn faithfully; hisses and ticks echoing throughout the cavernous ruins, bolstered by clouds of steam. Small mechanical creatures scuttle about, performing repairs on the city, as well as each other.

While adventurers have made it into some areas of the city, you find many of their bones lying covered in dust. When you finally enter the room deep within the city that has been left undisturbed since the calamity—the room containing the weapon—you trip it’s defense system. Suddenly hundreds of the little mechanical creatures swarm the floors, banding together in its center to create a gigantic clockwork dragon.

Once defeated, you trigger the seal suspending the weapon in a cage above the magma. As the chamber is lifted up, the weapon is revealed to be a young girl.

What’s happening? The ones who built this city succeeded at creating synthetic life. However, they did not know its cost. The girl is a homunculus, made in an experiment that unknowingly harvested the lives of the entire civilization.

By the time they realized the consequences of their spell, it was too late to stop. Seeking to create immortal life, they instead transferred all of their lifetimes into their creation, who has been held in stasis ever since.

She does not need food, or water. Wounds that would kill her heal as they use up one of the hundreds of lives she has left. Her creators were magical beings and when they created her, they transferred their power into her as well. She holds all their magical potential, broiling within her—but she doesn’t know how to control it. Not yet.

Highly impressionable and taken to flights of imagination, she can be molded into something good or evil.

Free TTRPG Battlemap – Temple Boneyard

Carved into the mountainside, the ruins of this large temple lie broken and overrun by the return of nature. The main chambers roof has partially collapsed in places allowing water to seep in creating small pools where forest creatures come to drink but never leave, their small bones scattering the floor.

A tunnel leads deeper to a set of stairs flanked by broken stone pillars. At it’s peak is an overgrown circular chamber containing six ancient statues and the remains of many large animals and men.
